Hello blogosphere.

Long time, no speak. We’ve been typically slack, only… we haven’t.

2011 has got off to a banging start. We’ve just come back from a fierce weekender with our good pals Run, WALK!. We saw mad dance-offs, crowd surfing, human pyramids… these shows were corkers. Lots of metal claws too. Shit got crazy. Yeooooowwwwww!

Mike Lebanons/ETTA gets his crowd surf on in Canterbury

Alex got fucked up on booze. Lee got fucked up on co-codamol (for a tooth ache). Nick fucked up his bass. I made a fucking good roast dinner. It was all good.

We even started playing one of two new tunes we’ve been working on. In fact, we’re heading into the studio soon to lay them down. What’s happening with the Black Hands 7” we’ve been talking about for ages? It’s coming. Our friend Matt has been busy making some mind blowingly good art.

So we’re feeling pretty good right now. More shows on the way, more songs on the way… rock on.

We played our final show of 2010 the other night.

It was a cool show, albeit a bit of an odd one, with The Xcerts at the Tap n’ Tin. What this means is we were first on a bill of pop-rock bands. Kind of out-of-place but I think most people dug us.

A lot of the crowd was pretty young. I don’t think they had ever heard of Hot Snakes. They’ll learn. We had a few walk-outs but what can you do. Probably didn’t help that I (Chris) managed to play a couple of songs in the wrong tuning. D’oh.

Post-performance drinks

The Xcerts were pretty cool guys (good live too) and spoke about taking us on tour in 2011. Hopefully something will come of that.

We’re gearing up for the new year following a particularly lazy second half of 2010. We have a few cool things in store already - more on that soon.

In the mean time, we’re going to be finishing off some new songs (we’ve been listening to a lot of Obits - maybe they’ll have a similar vibe) and finally getting the Black Hands 7” finished. No, we actually are - I promise.

We have to give a big shout out to Dan Lucas of Jairus and Anchor Baby Recordings. He leant me an amp at short notice after my Selmer dies (again). Absolute dude - we owe you Dan!

Back in January we got our asses kicked by the snow. It sucked.

We were due to play three shows with Maths and Sky:Lark. We managed one.

Our show with the awesome Burning Love on Wednesday suffered the same fate. But this time we decided to show the snow who’s boss by organising a last minute replacement show at the Canterbury Music Rooms.

Twenty-four hours is no time to put a show together, so we were blown away when a bunch of people turned up in freezing temperatures to watch us and Black.White.Colour play in a 30 capacity room. Even more amazing was the news that the room was rigged with a camera and mics, meaning the show could be broadcast over the internet. No shit?

We found out an hour before show time and posted the news on the interweb, thinking nothing else of it. Turns out 46 people went online to see us play. Amazing. If you fancy killing 20 minutes, here’s a link to the video: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/11195437

We’re going to be sorting out more of these broacastable shows in the future, so keep your eyes peeled.

We’re playing what could be our last show of the year with The Xcerts at the Tap n’ Tin in Chatam tomorrow. In the meantime, feast your eyes on some pics from the practice rooms show by Kraken Photography.

  1. Music scribe Paul Waller has said some nice things about our demo (and last Canterbury show) in his blog.

Remember Dischord Records in the late 80’sand early 90’s? Well Kent’s Great Ancestors do. On this 2nd demo the group play a caustic scratchy hardcore with some fantastic vocals. Be Serious Now has a most impressive middle section which reminds me of BLUETIP when they were at their best. My favourite track here is Tone? Tone which is a full on raging blast with two distinct vocals battling for prominence in the track. It’s exhausting to listen to let alone play live for the band and yet when I saw them play it, it seemed effortless. In that live environment this band is a pretty well oiled machine, hiding their youth and relatively recent formation into a sweaty primal half hour set. One of the counties brightest hopes me thinks.

Cheers Paul! Go and check out his site because it’s a bloody good read.

Also, a reminder that it’s our Brighton show with Kid Pang, Lebanons, Sky:Lark and Everyone to the Anderson at the Pav Tav tomorrow. Get on that.

Kid Pang, Sky:Lark, Everyone to the Anderson, Lebanons and Great Ancestors hitting up sunny old Brighton (at the Pav Tav to be precise) on Thursday, 15th July.

What’s not to like? It all kicks off at 7.30 so come on down.

It’s a bit of a double birthday celebration for us too. It’ll be pretty much a year since our first show but more importantly it’s this cheeky little guy’s birthday.

Show him some love and more importantly, buy him a drink.

Testing, one, two…
